Kara Schmidt, PA-C is a board-certified Physician Assistant. She is certified to care for individuals of all ages, but her passion is in working with children and their families. Kara first began her studies at Michigan State University where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and went on for her post graduate internship at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). She was a clinical hospital dietitian and is credited with developing the role of the dietitian in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Pontiac General Hospital after completing an internship at Riley Hospital for Children. She went on as a clinical dietitian for several years at the University of Michigan Health System in OB/GYN and Pediatrics including high risk clinics. Then, given her volunteerism for the Michigan Dietetic Association including political advocacy and community education, she was awarded Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year in 2000.
Later, with the goal of practicing medicine to positively impact patient’s lives, she was inspired to return to school to become a physician assistant. She earned her Master of Science in Biomedical Science at the University of Toledo in the Physician Assistant program. Since becoming a PA, Kara has worked in general pediatrics until accepting her current position at Houston Specialty Clinic in pediatric neurology and sleep. She feels humbled to share her extensive personal experience with autism, in support of patients with neurological differences and their families.
